John Malkovich Cancels Tel Aviv Show After Misattributed Quote
John Malkovich has cancelled a planned performance in Tel Aviv after promoters circulated a quote that the actor said was completely false. The actor was scheduled to appear in the touring comedy‑musical "The Music Critic," a show that blends classical music with satirical commentary on famous composers. The performance was set for April 2027 at a Tel Aviv venue.
A press release issued by the show’s promoters quoted Malkovich as saying, "I am thrilled to return to Israel and am looking forward to meeting the warm Israeli audience once again, to whom I feel a strong closeness and solidarity." Malkovich denied ever making those statements. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, he said, "I never made the statements that were quoted, nor was I consulted before they were printed. I did not utter these phrases, and they most certainly are not approved by me, nor do they reflect my feelings. For this reason, I have decided I cannot participate in the Tel Aviv performance."
Alon Yurik, the Israeli producer of the show, issued a statement that the quote was wrongly attributed to Malkovich because of "human error." He said the production had contacted media outlets to remove the quote and correct the reports, and that an apology had been issued. Yurik added, "I regret that the incident developed to the point of the performance being cancelled."
The cancellation comes amid a broader trend of cultural isolation for Israel. Since the 2023 Gaza war, a number of international artists have declined to perform in the country, and the annual Israel Festival, which usually features international acts, proceeded without any foreign performers this year. The incident highlights the sensitivity of Israeli audiences and the political context that can affect touring productions.
Malkovich has performed in Israel before and has stated that performing in a country does not mean he endorses its political leaders or policies. The actor is a two‑time Academy Award nominee, known for films such as "Dangerous Liaisons," "In the Line of Fire," and "Con Air." He is currently starring in "Wild Horse Nine," a film about the CIA’s role in the 1973 Chilean coup.
The Tel Aviv venue will now be without the scheduled show, and no replacement dates have been announced. Representatives for Malkovich did not respond to a request for comment.
