13-Year-Old Michelle Garcia Trains for K-Pop Idol Career at SM Universe Singapore
At just 13, Michelle Garcia has turned her weekends into a rigorous training regimen that takes her across the sea from Manila to Singapore every Friday.
The young talent is enrolled in the K‑Pop Professional Training Programme at SM Universe Singapore, the first K‑Pop training academy in Southeast Asia. Launched by South Korean label SM Entertainment in 2025 and officially opened on January 24, 2026, the campus sits in the SCAPE building along Orchard Road. The academy offers the same curriculum used by SM Entertainment’s Korean trainees, covering vocals, dance, performance and songwriting.
According to the academy’s public statements, more than 600 students from over ten countries have already completed the program as of early 2026. Korean instructors lead the sessions, guiding students through the technical and artistic demands that define the K‑Pop idol system. The weekly schedule requires trainees to travel internationally, a commitment that Michelle and her family have embraced.
In a recent Instagram post, Michelle described the experience as “worthwhile” and said the program has helped her learn new techniques for both singing and dancing. She encouraged other young people to step outside their comfort zones, noting that trying something new can reveal hidden abilities. The post, shared on SM Universe’s feed, shows Michelle in a dance studio, her focus reflected in the intensity of her practice.
Michelle’s performance background predates the academy. In 2024 she was selected as part of the backup dance team for IU’s H.E.R.E.H World Tour stop in Bulacan. The following year, she joined ABS‑CBN’s Star Magic talent roster, marking her entry into the Philippine entertainment industry. She also produces content on social media and has publicly expressed support for K‑Pop groups such as BLACKPINK and BINI.
Patrick Garcia and Nikka Martinez have been active supporters of Michelle’s training. Nikka posted a series of photos and reflections on Instagram about ten consecutive weekends spent in Singapore, describing the trips as memorable bonding moments. The parents’ involvement underscores the family’s commitment to Michelle’s artistic development.
SM Entertainment is one of the “Big Four” K‑Pop agencies, alongside Hybe, YG and JYP. The launch of SM Universe Singapore represents a strategic expansion of the company’s training infrastructure into Southeast Asia, a region with a large K‑Pop fan base. By providing local access to Korean‑style training, the academy may broaden the talent pipeline for both regional and international markets.
Michelle continues her weekly training sessions at SM Universe Singapore, while the academy maintains its enrollment of students from across the region. No further announcements have been made regarding her future projects or potential debut plans.
