Essel Group Celebrates 100-Year Milestone Amid Tribute to Late Patriarch Nand Kishore Goenka

On August 1, 2026, the Essel Group marked a century of growth with a gala at the Mumbai Convention Centre that attracted politicians, media executives, actors and civil‑society leaders. The event celebrated the company’s 100‑year journey—from a grain shop in Haryana to a powerhouse in India’s media, entertainment and infrastructure arenas—and paid homage to founder Nand Kishore (N.K.) Goenka, who passed away on July 13, 2026.

The group’s roots stretch back to 1926, when Jagannath Goenka opened Messrs Ramgopal Indraprasad as a grain store in Adampur Mandi (now Okara Dukaan). In 1941 the business moved to Hisar, Haryana, and by 1948 it had opened a pulse‑processing plant in Delhi. The next generation, led by N.K. Goenka’s son Subhash Chandra, shifted the focus from agriculture to industry and renamed the firm Essel Group of Industries in 1976.

Essel’s diversification accelerated in the 1990s. The company opened Essel World, Asia’s largest amusement park, in 1990, and launched Zee TV, India’s first Hindi entertainment channel, in 1992. A year later it introduced Zee News, the country’s first privately owned 24‑hour news channel, and expanded overseas with Zee TV UK. The new millennium saw further expansion: Shirpur Refinery, Asia’s largest gold refinery, debuted in 2001; Dish TV, which became the region’s largest direct‑to‑home network, launched in 2004; and E‑City Bioscope, a multiplex cinema chain, entered the market in 2005.

In 2007 Essel Infraprojects Ltd was founded, followed by Essel Finance Management LLP in 2013 and Living Entertainment Enterprises Private Limited in 2014. The group also broadened into technology and packaging; Essel Propack Limited, launched in 1981, grew into the world’s largest laminated plastic tube manufacturer.

The centenary ceremony highlighted the group’s imprint on Indian media. Organizers presented a retrospective of Essel’s milestones, screened a documentary on the evolution of satellite television in India, and heard speeches from senior executives. A tribute segment honored N.K. Goenka, who is credited with steering the family through successive generations. Subhash Chandra Goel, the current chairman, noted that the centenary “underscores the resilience and adaptability that have defined Essel’s journey.”

Industry observers see the celebration as a reminder of Essel’s role in shaping India’s broadcasting landscape. The company’s early entry into private television and its subsequent expansion into news, entertainment and digital platforms positioned it as a benchmark for other Indian media conglomerates. Analysts also point to the group’s diversification into infrastructure, packaging and technology as a model for cross‑sector growth.

The event was broadcast live on Zee TV and Zee News. In addition to corporate leaders, actors Rakesh Bedi and Shreyas Talpade appeared to discuss the group’s influence on the entertainment industry.

Following the ceremony, Essel’s leadership announced plans to continue focusing on media innovation and infrastructure development. The board stated it will maintain core businesses while exploring new opportunities in digital content and sustainable infrastructure.

The 100‑year celebration, coupled with the tribute to N.K. Goenka, marks a significant moment for the Essel Group, underscoring its century‑long evolution from a grain shop to a diversified conglomerate that has played a pivotal role in India’s media and entertainment sectors.
