Retired Volunteer Jeff Kish Logs 200 Hours to Support Musikfest 2026
Retired consultant Jeff Kish is turning his spare hours into a 200‑hour contribution to Pennsylvania’s biggest free music festival.
Kish, a longtime resident of Lower Nazareth, has already clocked 200 volunteer hours for Musikfest 2026, the nation’s largest free music event. The 43rd‑annual festival runs from July 31 to August 9 in Bethlehem, where more than 500 concerts will spill across 15 stages.
His work is as varied as the music itself. On the North Side he spends time as a stagehand, hauling equipment and setting up rigging. One day a week he pours beer for festivalgoers, a task that “everyone has to learn how to pour beer at Musikfest,” Kish says. He also helps erect signage and fencing to guide the flow of thousands of visitors.
Musikfest is organized by ArtsQuest, a nonprofit that operates the SteelStacks and Banana Factory arts centers in Bethlehem. The festival draws huge crowds and relies on a volunteer corps of roughly 1,000 people. ArtsQuest reports that 300 of those volunteers are new, each working an average of 20 hours per week during the 11‑day event.
“I like good organization. I like seeing things professionally done, being part of that, helping improve it,” Kish added. “ArtsQuest is an organization that does things very well, so I’m kind of drawn to that.”
ArtsQuest’s communications manager, Tehani Boyer, praised Kish’s dedication. “I think Jeff is remarkable just in terms of having that type of caliber of person who’s looking to volunteer for a worthwhile organization and really just give their all,” Boyer said.
The volunteer program is open to anyone who wants to help. Participants receive a festival shirt, food vouchers, and the chance to work behind the scenes of a major cultural event. Applications can be found at artsquest.org/volunteer.
A preview night on July 30 is a key event for volunteers, allowing them to familiarize themselves with stage layouts and crowd flow before the main festival begins. Kish’s participation in the preview night is part of his broader preparation for the full schedule.
The 2026 lineup includes more than 300 performers and 500 free concerts. The premium Steel Stage will host nationally known recording artists, while other stages feature a mix of genres.
