Indian Celebrities Lead 12th International Yoga Day Celebrations on June 21
On Saturday, June 21, India’s streets and stadiums became a living tapestry of asanas as the country marked the 12th anniversary of International Yoga Day. The event, first celebrated in 2015 after a United Nations resolution championed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, carried this year’s theme, “Yoga for Healthy Ageing.” The theme underscored yoga’s proven benefits for physical resilience and mental clarity as people grow older.
In the capital, actor Akshay Kumar gathered with more than 3,000 participants at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium for a mass yoga session. Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya led the practice, and the pair posed together for a photo that quickly went viral. Kumar later shared a carousel of his own poses on Instagram, labeling each with the Sanskrit terms Sthirta, Santulan, Shakti—meaning Stability, Balance, Strength—highlighting the discipline’s holistic focus.
Just a few hours later, the upscale suburb of Gurugram hosted its own gathering, where actress Shilpa Shetty performed a series of asanas inspired by a memorable scene from the 1975 classic Sholay. She recalled Dharmendra’s character grinding grain with a millstone and urged participants to keep their knees and hands straight while moving in a smooth, circular motion from front to back, turning a cinematic moment into a mindful practice.
The day’s momentum spread across the country. Bhagyashree posted a short video on social media demonstrating the Tree Pose (Vrikshasana) and Gaumukhasana, encouraging viewers to hold each pose for ten seconds to earn a point. Meanwhile, Rakul Preet shared a photo of herself in mid‑stretch, writing that each movement builds strength and each breath brings peace.
Mumbai’s vibrant streets echoed with yoga as Shahid Kapoor joined a large gathering that featured children in crisp white outfits following a teacher at the front. Esha Deol, meanwhile, joined a session at the Gateway of India and later captioned a photo: “Started with Yoga Day and ended up with my Sunday treat, Melody.” Her post illustrated how the day’s activities can blend tradition with everyday life.
The 12th International Yoga Day was part of a global effort to encourage people of all ages to practice yoga. According to reports, the theme “Yoga for Healthy Ageing” was selected to spotlight yoga’s role in maintaining physical vitality and mental well‑being as people grow older. The United Nations resolution that established the day received unanimous support from 177 member states, cementing yoga’s place on the world stage.
The involvement of high‑profile actors and public figures helped amplify the day’s message. By participating in public sessions, they demonstrated that yoga is accessible to anyone, regardless of age or fitness level, and reinforced its benefits for health and resilience.
Celebrations unfolded not only in Delhi, Gurugram, and Mumbai but also in cities across India, such as Kolkata, where Prime Minister Modi was expected to lead the national ceremony. Similar mass yoga sessions, community outreach programs, and extensive media coverage took place worldwide, continuing the tradition of promoting yoga as a holistic approach to well‑being.
The next International Yoga Day will fall on June 21 2027, and the theme for that year has not yet been announced. For now, the 12th edition remains a testament to yoga’s enduring appeal and its power to bring together communities, celebrities, and ordinary citizens in pursuit of health, balance, and peace.
