Bandai Namco Unveils Gundam: Rogue Orbit, a New Mech Action Game Debuting in 2027

At the June 5, 2026 Summer Game Fest, Bandai Namco Entertainment announced Gundam: Rogue Orbit, the first Gundam title to open a fresh universe in a video game. The title will hit PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC in 2027. The developers describe the experience as a high‑mobility action game that marries cinematic storytelling with rapid combat.

The Gundam saga began with the 1979 anime Mobile Suit Gundam and has since expanded into a sprawling array of series, films, and games. Most of those games have replayed established timelines such as the Universal Century or the After Colony. Rogue Orbit breaks that mold by building an original setting crafted specifically for a game.

In an interview with IGN, lead producer Yuya Tomiyama explained that the world was designed with gameplay first. He said the team wanted players to “feel the experience of being a Gundam pilot” and to “control every motion of the Mobile Suit.” Tomiyama emphasized that the action focus is intended to make combat feel “really good to play” and to give players a sense of agency.

The enemies in the trailer diverge from classic Gundam duels. Instead of facing other Mobile Suits, the protagonist confronts large, monster‑like creatures. Tomiyama noted that these foes were chosen to highlight the “satisfying feeling of using the Gundam’s weapons” and to amplify the game’s kinetic impact.

Narratively, the developers aim to bring Gundam’s emotional core to new audiences. Chief producer Shinya Satake said the story revolves around “the conflict between humans and unknown adversaries” and will present difficult choices for characters such as RE‑X, Sofia, and a new Haro companion named Vii. Satake added that the game will explore themes of human spirit and the limits of humanity in a tense world.

Photorealism is a key technical goal. Bandai Namco Studios, the developer, has a history with Gundam titles and other mech games. Tomiyama explained that the studio leveraged its expertise to create a “photorealistic world” while preserving the iconic Gundam design language. He highlighted the effort to make the Gundam’s movements feel alive and responsive.

Gundam: Rogue Orbit will be published by Bandai Namco Entertainment, the same company that owns the Gundam IP through its Sunrise subsidiary. The game’s release window was confirmed by a Bandai Namco press release on the company’s official website, which also listed the platforms and the 2027 launch date.

The Summer Game Fest announcement follows a broader industry trend of major franchises testing new entry points for wider audiences. By launching a brand‑new universe, Bandai Namco hopes to attract both long‑time Gundam fans and newcomers who have never experienced the series.

At present, the project’s next steps include finalizing the release date, completing the game’s content, and preparing marketing materials for the 2027 launch. No additional details about the story or gameplay mechanics have been released beyond the interview and the teaser trailer.

Fans can expect further updates on the game’s official website and Bandai Namco’s social channels as the launch approaches.
