Blizzards Hearthstone Launches Escape From Violet Hold Expansion on July 7, 2026
Blizzard Entertainment has announced that its collectible‑card game Hearthstone will receive its 36th expansion, Escape From Violet Hold, on Tuesday, July 7, 2026. The new set brings 135 cards, introduces the Prepare keyword and Legendary Rulebreaker minions, and is backed by a series of in‑game events that start on June 2. A Battlegrounds update accompanies the launch, re‑introducing Anomalies and adding fresh tavern spells and trinkets.
The story of Escape From Violet Hold follows Vanessa VanCleef, a former Defias Brotherhood member who rallies a crew of outlaws inside Dalaran’s maximum‑security prison. Warden Maiev Shadowsong has turned the Violet Hold into a shifting arcane maze, and players help Vanessa orchestrate a breakout. Blizzard’s design team says the narrative gives players a new tactical focus while expanding the Warcraft lore.
Among the 135 cards are several that use the new Prepare keyword. Prepare allows a player to spend unused mana to reduce a card’s cost, but the card cannot be played until the next turn, giving decks more flexibility and the potential for explosive turns. Every class also receives a Legendary Rulebreaker minion that alters a core Hearthstone rule. For example, the Warrior’s Chainbreaker Hogger duplicates all other Legendary cards in a deck at game start, and the Death Knight’s Blood Doctor Thal’ena grants a second hero power. The expansion also introduces Disguised minions—a first in Hearthstone history—that can be played on an opponent’s side of the board.
Blizzard has scheduled a series of pre‑launch events to build momentum. From June 2 to June 16, the Prison Break event invites players to help Vanessa gather inmates from other Azeroth prisons. The Lockdown event runs from June 16 to July 7 and tasks players with completing missions while Maiev tightens security. A Legendary Quest Chain is available from the start of Patch 35.6 until the expansion’s release; completing the quest rewards Standard‑mode players with loot. A pre‑release Tavern Brawl began on June 30 at 10:00 a.m. PDT, a week before the expansion launch.
The Battlegrounds update focuses on Anomalies—effects that transform the tavern for all players at the start of each game. Seven new Anomalies are added, along with 17 returning ones and five updated variants. Blizzard also updated minion cards, tavern spells, and trinkets to align with the new mechanics and to refresh the competitive meta. The update is part of Season 13’s second half and is expected to influence how players build and play their Battlegrounds decks.
Escape From Violet Hold is Blizzard’s second expansion of the Year of the Scarab and follows the company’s tradition of adding new lore, mechanics, and card variety. The expansion will launch at 10:00 a.m. PT on July 7, 2026, and will be available on all platforms that support Hearthstone, including Windows, macOS, iOS, and Android. Players who purchase the expansion receive a new card pack and can begin building decks that incorporate the new Prepare keyword, Rulebreaker minions, and Disguised cards.
The expansion’s release is scheduled for July 7, 2026, with all pre‑launch events concluding on that date. Blizzard will continue to support the expansion with additional content and balance changes in future patches.
