Netflixs The Witcher Switches Geralt Lead to Liam Hemsworth for Final Seasons

When Netflix’s hit fantasy series The Witcher pivoted on a new hero, the world watched. The show returned on October 30, 2025, with a fresh face stepping into the iconic role of Geralt of Rivia. Liam Hemsworth, who first made headlines as Katniss in The Hunger Games and later as a star of Independence Day: Resurgence, took the mantle from Henry Cavill, who had embodied the monster‑hunter for the first three seasons.

The change came after the third season wrapped in July 2023. Netflix’s decision, announced in an April 2024 renewal press release, was framed as a necessary move to keep the saga moving forward after Cavill’s departure. Hemsworth, who had been attached to the series since the announcement of the fourth season, will carry Geralt through the eight‑episode run based on the novel Baptism of Fire and into the series’ final chapter.

Voice actor Doug Cockle, the English voice behind Geralt in CD Projekt Red’s video‑game franchise, weighed in on the challenge of stepping into a character already deeply ingrained in fans’ minds. Speaking to Polygon, Cockle said, “It’s tough to do what Hemsworth did… to be the actor replacing someone else who originated a character in the same series is so difficult.” He likened the task to taking on a role that has existed for centuries, such as Hamlet, noting that each performer brings personal quirks and experiences to the part. Cockle added that he will continue voicing Geralt “as long as I am able to and am welcome.”

Beyond the screen, Cockle’s partnership with the franchise extends to the gaming world. He is slated to reprise his voice role in the upcoming Songs of the Past expansion for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, slated for a 2027 release. The expansion, developed in collaboration with Fool’s Theory—the studio behind the 2021 remake of The Witcher 1—will follow Geralt on a new adventure, further intertwining the narrative threads across media.

The television series, created by Lauren Schmidt Hissrich, draws from the books of Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski. Netflix first premiered the show on December 20, 2019, with Cavill as Geralt. Subsequent seasons adapted Blood of Elves, Time of Contempt, and Baptism of Fire. The franchise has also expanded into spin‑offs: the animated origin story Nightmare of the Wolf (2021), the miniseries Blood Origin (2022), the animated film Sirens of the Deep (2025), and the feature‑length special The Rats: A Witcher Tale (2025).

The 2024 renewal for a fifth and final season confirms that the narrative will culminate with the events of the concluding arc. While Netflix has yet to set a release date, the production team intends to finish the story on the same high notes that have defined the series’ run.

In summary, the lead role of Geralt of Rivia has transitioned from Henry Cavill to Liam Hemsworth for the fourth season and will remain with Hemsworth for the final season. Voice actor Doug Cockle acknowledges the difficulty of stepping into a well‑known character and will continue to voice Geralt in the forthcoming video‑game expansion. The Witcher franchise remains active across television, animation, and gaming, with new content slated for release in the coming years.
