Seth MacFarlane Signals Potential Family Guy Movie, Conditions Set

Seth MacFarlane, the mind behind the long‑running animated sitcom Family Guy, revealed in a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter that a feature film version of the show remains on the table, but only under particular circumstances.

"The Family Guy feature film is something that’s still always in the back of my head," MacFarlane told the reporter. "I’ve always had a pretty clear idea of what it’s going to be. It’s that arrow in the quiver that I keep for when everything else goes to shit." He explained that a major professional setback—such as a poorly received film or television project—would be the trigger for launching a movie to “cleanse the palette of the audience.” The comments were made as the series entered its twenty‑fourth season.

Fox and Hulu have already committed to a two‑season spin‑off centered on Stewie Griffin, slated to debut in the 2027–28 television season. The spin‑off, co‑created by MacFarlane and long‑time writer Kirker Butler, is part of a broader expansion of the Family Guy franchise that includes the main series, which remains on Fox.

Family Guy first aired on January 31, 1999, and quickly became a staple of adult animation. Early seasons drew an average of 10 million viewers, peaking at 22 million for the 1999 premiere. In recent years, live‑air ratings have stabilized in the 600,000 to 700,000 range per episode, but the series has maintained strong streaming performance. Nielsen data shows the show consistently ranks between fourth and sixth among the most‑watched animated programs in the United States, and it has accumulated between 40 and 60 billion minutes of viewing each year.

In 2025, the series received a Streaming Icon Award after surpassing 60 billion minutes of streamed content. The show is available on Hulu, where it has also performed well in the platform’s top‑ten lists.

The potential for a feature film does not alter the current trajectory of the series. In April 2025, Fox announced a “mega deal” with Disney that renews Family Guy through the 2028–29 television season, covering four additional seasons. The twenty‑fourth season premiered in October 2025, with regular episodes beginning in February 2026.

While MacFarlane’s remarks leave the timing of a film open, they confirm that the creator is still considering the idea. The statement also underscores the creator’s willingness to explore new formats if the television series were to experience a significant downturn.

Industry observers note that a Family Guy movie would follow a trend of long‑running animated series expanding into feature‑length projects. However, no production schedule, studio partner, or release window has been announced.

At this time, the only concrete developments are the continued renewal of the main series, the upcoming Stewie spin‑off, and the ongoing strong streaming performance that keeps the franchise profitable for Fox and Hulu.

The situation remains fluid, and any future announcement regarding a Family Guy film will likely come from MacFarlane or Fox executives. Until then, fans can continue to watch the series on Fox and Hulu while the show maintains its place among the most‑watched animated programs in the United States.
