Colony Surpasses 5 Million Admissions, Becomes Fastest Korean Film of 2026 to Reach Milestone

Colony broke through the 5‑million‑viewer mark on June 15, according to the Korean Film Council’s KOBIS data, making it the quickest Korean picture of 2026 to hit the milestone.

The zombie‑thriller, directed by Yeon Sang‑ho, drew 114,970 new patrons the day before and held the No. 1 position on the domestic box‑office chart. Its cumulative audience now stands at 5,212,823, placing it second among all releases for the year.

The film eclipsed last year’s top‑grossing feature, My Daughter Is a Zombie, which closed with 5.64 million viewers. Colony also outran The King and the Clown, a comedy that attracted 16.89 million people, by reaching the 5‑million threshold in just two days less.

Colony follows a group of survivors locked inside a sealed building as an unidentified infection spreads. The cast includes Jun Ji‑hyun, Koo Kyo‑hwan, Ji Chang‑wook, Shin Hyun‑been, and Kim Shin‑rok. The film premiered in the Midnight Screenings section of the 2026 Cannes Film Festival on May 15 and opened in South Korean theaters on May 21.

On the same day the film hit 5 million, the comedy Wild Thing, starring Gang Dong‑won, drew 76,586 viewers and now sits third overall with 869,723 admissions. Wild Thing follows a three‑member dance group attempting a comeback 20 years after a sudden breakup.

Advance ticket‑sale data shows Toy Story 5 leading the market with 39.7 % of the share, followed by Colony at 10.7 % and Wild Thing at 6.5 %. These percentages reflect the current consumer interest before the films hit theaters.

Colony’s rapid climb is unprecedented. It reached 1 million viewers on its fourth day, 2 million on the eighth, and 4 million by day fourteen, setting a new record for the fastest Korean film of 2026 to hit each milestone. The pace underscores the domestic appetite for high‑stakes horror and the draw of Yeon Sang‑ho’s direction.

The Korean Film Council’s data also points to a broader trend of strong domestic releases in 2026, with several titles achieving multi‑million admissions in record time. Colony’s success may shape distributors’ strategies for future releases, particularly those featuring established stars like Jun Ji‑hyun and directors with international recognition.

At present, Colony remains the highest‑grossing Korean film of the year and continues to attract audiences. No official end‑of‑run date has been announced, but the box‑office trajectory suggests it will remain a top performer for several weeks.
