Peter Sarsgaard Joins HBOs The Last of Us Season 3 as New Seraphite Leader
Peter Sarsgaard, known for his roles in The Batman and The Bride, has been cast as Amon, a new character who leads the Seraphite cult in HBO’s upcoming third season of The Last of Us. Entertainment Weekly confirmed the casting, noting that Amon does not appear in any of the original video games or companion media.
The third season of the series, which is produced by Sony Pictures Television, PlayStation Productions, Naughty Dog, the Mighty Mint, and Word Games, will shift the narrative focus to Abby Anderson, played by Kaitlyn Dever. The storyline will begin a few days before the events of the second season’s finale, as Ellie (Bella Ramsey) and Dina (Isabela Merced) arrive in Seattle to hunt Abby. The season will primarily unfold from Abby’s perspective, expanding the world established in the games.
Amon’s character is described as a prominent Seraphite leader in and around Seattle. The Seraphites, a religious cult introduced in season two, are in conflict with the Washington Liberation Front (W.L.F.), a militia group led by Isaac (Jeffrey Wright). The W.L.F. refers to Seraphite members with the slur “Scars” because of the ritualistic facial cuts that mark their members. The new character will deepen the portrayal of the cult’s influence in the series.
Production of season three is taking place in Vancouver, British Columbia. The crew, which includes thousands of workers, is scheduled to take a planned hiatus in the middle of the shoot. The break coincides with the arrival of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Vancouver, which has made filming on location more difficult. The pause is intended as a rest period before production resumes.
In addition to Sarsgaard, the season’s cast will feature Patrick Wilson as Jerry Anderson, Abby’s father and a Firefly surgeon killed by Joel Miller in the first season. Jason Ritter will portray Hanley, a W.L.F. soldier, and Jorge Lendeborg Jr. will take over the role of Manny, a member of Abby’s crew previously played by Danny Ramirez. Ramirez left the show due to scheduling conflicts.
The series’ third season will also include returning Seraphite characters Yara (Michelle Mao) and Lev (Kyriana Kratter), siblings who cross paths with Abby in Seattle. Clea Duvall is reported to play another cult member, though her character’s identity has not yet been confirmed.
Craig Mazin, who co‑created the series with game co‑creator Neil Druckmann, is the sole showrunner and lead writer for season three. Druckmann remains attached as an executive producer but has stepped back from day‑to‑day responsibilities to focus on the next Naughty Dog game.
HBO head Casey Bloys has indicated that the third season will premiere sometime in 2027, though a specific date has not yet been announced. Filming for the season began in March 2026 and is expected to conclude in November 2026.
The addition of Peter Sarsgaard as Amon and the planned production pause reflect the series’ continued expansion of the The Last of Us universe. The new character will provide a fresh perspective on the Seraphite cult, while the hiatus allows the crew to adjust to the logistical challenges posed by the World Cup.
At this time, the series remains in production with the cast and crew preparing for the next chapter of the story. No further details about release dates or additional cast members have been released.
