As the Sex and the City reboot has been filming all over New York (and sometimes Paris) it has been fun to get a preview of the fashions the ladies will be sporting. The And Just Like That show just filmed a night scene at the ‘Au Cheval’ Restaurant in Downtown. The ruched, off the shoulder dress Sarah Jessica Parker wore was particularly eye-catching because it is reminiscent of one of the dresses that made Carrie Bradshaw’s sense of fashion famous in the original series’ episode titled Shortcomings. Shortcomings could have been a descriptor for the length of that black dress.
It was a mini, stopping just below the hips, just the thing to wear when washing windows. Now an older Carrie is wearing a longer version of the same dress. This time it’s in powder blue, but the Norma Kamali design comes in fuschia as well. The material is a soft jersey. Of course, depending on how you style it, it can be quite elegant, but is it really up to Carrie Bradshaw’s standards? I mean, it costs less than $250 and Carrie and her friends spend more than that on their cupcakes!
By Miranda’s calculations, Carrie had $40,000 worth of shoes, at $400 a pair. Manolo Blahnik, Salvatore Ferragamo, Jimmy Choo, Louboutin, Valentino, RenĂ© Caovilla … Does this dress really stand up to those? Among online fans, the worry is that Carrie’s style budget has been crimped. They don’t want to see her in dresses they could buy at Macy’s. They want to revel in what is out of their league, to take a voyeurs’ pleasure in viewing the original, not the knock off.

Remember, it was Princess Diana that made this style famous, albeit it in a two-shouldered version.

Princess Diana made a statement to the world by wearing a Christina Stambolian black dress during a function at the Serpentine Gallery in London, the same night that Prince Charles admitted in a television interview that he had committed adultery. This was one of the most famous of Princess Diana’s outfits and was auctioned at Christie’s in 1997. What a clap back from Diana to Charles. Hers was what could be called a revenge dress. Fans want Carrie Bradshaw to channel those Diana type of goals in her glamor.
