Shakira has been boating for several days now and here’s a video of the latest in her leisure. A few days ago she was surfing, perhaps to get her mind off the fact that a judge in Spain has found that there is enough evidence to send her to trial for tax evasion. She must have remembered to forget the possible consequences looming in her future.

It took 3 years for the decision to come down, but a judge has recommended that the matter go to trial. Shakira has been accused of failing to pay $16.4 million in taxes. She has denied all charges, but the judge tasked with reviewing the charges said that there was “sufficient evidence of criminality” for the matter to go forward. That means in addition to a fine and order to pay any delinquent taxes, Shakira could actually face criminal charges.

Shakira first testified in her own defense back in 2019. When faced with the prospect of trial, her representatives issued a statement: “There is currently no debt,” they insisted. “Shakira has always fulfilled her tax duties in all those countries in which she has worked, including in the period between 2011 and 2014.”

“She followed the opinions and precise recommendations of her advisers, who are top-level professionals from one of the biggest companies in the world.”

Shakira is making new music. She has been idle because of Covid restrictions that made it difficult for her to be in close proximity with other performers and producers. There are some things you just can’t do via zoom. But now she’s back at work and raring to go. Since it took 3 years for the judge to evaluate the tax charges, it could also take just as long for the matter to get to trial, if ever. The case could always be dismissed or settled out of court. That means that Shakira’s fans don’t have to worry about losing her talent in the immediate future.
